[Review] Code Geass Nunally in Wonderland -Makes you Sleepy Before Church

Written By: Andarew August 29, 2019

One Sunday morning I found myself with an hour of spare time before church wondering what to do with it. Getting ready was a breeze, so I decided to postpone that task until it is closer to the time to leave. Then an idea popped into my head. I figured I may as well burn through a little of my anime backlog. When I watch normal TV anime, I make a rule for myself that I should watch at least three episodes at a time. Three anime episodes is about one hour long, but I still needed spare time to get ready. So instead I went into my OVA library and decided to watch Nunally in Wonderland. I probably could have found something better to do, but you are probably bored of me rambling about my last Sunday morning, so I’ll get to the review. Since I’m reviewing an OVA, this review is going to be rather short. Let’s get on with it.

Story/Execution: 3/10

This OVA is basically a retelling of Alice in Wonderland using Code Geass characters in place of the characters in the original story. Lelouch even narrates the story for a lot of the OVA. Since this OVA is called Nunally in Wonderland, obviously Nunally is supposed to be Alice and the protagonist of this episode. That is basically it for the story. It’s pretty bland and generic, but it’s an OVA so it shouldn’t matter too much.

This OVA was executed rather poorly though. It makes references to the anime in its scenes. I think it’s trying to be funny, but I couldn’t really see the humor in anything. I was generally bored throughout the whole episode just waiting until I could go to church. A lot of the characters, specifically the girls of course, were underdressed in revealing or fanservicey clothing. I could tell that the whole episode was just for fanservice to cater to Code Geass fans. One thing I hate in anime is fanservice, so it only makes sense I would find this episode distasteful as a result of a large portion of this episode being fanservice.

Characters: 3/10

Before I start with the characters, I just need to make one thing clear. I’m rating the characters based on what I think of them from just this OVA alone, not from the franchise as a whole. Otherwise, the rating would be higher. Anyway, the characters are basically just the same as the ones from the anime. They take the place of characters from Alice in Wonderland. You have Nunally as Alice (duh), CC as the cheshire cat, Emperor Charles as the king of hearts, what? I forgot the rest because I was half asleep throughout the whole thing. If they didn’t use the people of Code Geass as the characters, even if the dialogue was the exact same, I would have completely forgotten about everyone in this OVA.

One quick thing to mention is that Lelouch seemed to be creepily obsessed with Nunally in this episode. They ruined him in this OVA, which is why I dropped the rating to a three.

Sound/Animation: 4/10

The sound is pretty average, enough said.

The animation was pretty boring. It used more of a visual novel sort of style rather than an anime with still frames of the characters talking to each other rather than being animated. There were a few moments where it was animated, but it was just standard Japanese animation. It didn’t bother me too much, but I would have much rather preferred the episode animated.

Anime Rating: 4/10

This OVA is pretty boring, but nothing to really hate with a passion. Instead of watching this OVA before I did, I recommend grabbing a quick nap instead. Afterall, you gotta make sure you stay awake in church.
