MIDNIGHT Remastered is a short indie horror game that was released on Steam
May 7, 2019. It is a remaster of the original MIDNIGHT web game. I tried out the original to see the differences, but they are very sparse. The Remaster basically makes the player’s view more obstructed with darkness, gives more freedom of movement (like diagonal walking) and has a bit better sound design. There are also extra modes and controller support that have been added.
Based on the ritual, the “Midnight Game” you play as a girl in a creepy mansion trying to collect 7 letters (*cough* slender anyone?) to “absolve her sins.” Not much is revealed about her, but you may develop suspicions along the way.
For story-wise, there are notes to find around and blood-writing on the walls sometimes, but I honestly couldn’t piece together a story that easily. The notes weren't that compelling either.
It’s abstract, but maybe that’s for the best, it’s the gameplay and atmosphere that we are here for.

That's a lot of work, thankfully you don't have to do all those tasks in-game 😩
The gameplay is classic horror material: find stuff, and try to not die.
The mansion itself is quite a doozy to explore, with each new room you find making your stomach churn with even more “bad feeling” energy. As you frantically try to find the letters, or just realize where you are, you’ll have a nice little buddy tailing you along the way.
What can best be described as an “angry-shadow-that’s-out-of-breath” this apparatus is really only made scary with the sound design, and when he teleports out of nowhere. But when you consider there are barely any safe spaces in the game, protecting your little matches from being blown out becomes stressful. Your biggest chances of survival come through how fast you can explore rooms, obtain items, and listen for sound cues. The sounds repeats a lot, but is still unsettling, especially if you hear something different. Same for the environment, you may see things that once were not there anymore or vice versa. It creates a good atmosphere.

Wow! A key!
All in all, it’s a very simple game, but great for quenching an evening horror fix.
While I would have liked to have more clarification with the story (which the unlocked modes do shed a teeny bit more light on) this sort of gameplay of “when you get killed you have to start all over and memorize from experience” is best when short. It can get frustrating, but if you learn from your mistakes and pay attention you can finish the whole game in an hour and a half (or at least the main game if you are geographically challenged like me)
It leaves an experience that is well worth $1.
