[Review] Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon- Spooky Dooky Doo 2

Whaaaaaa. Me doing a real game review. What kind of Harry Potter (Hufflepuff House, by the way, thanks for asking) magic am I under? But then I realized, Halloween is something that exists. Same for Mario, put two and two together, BAM, not Mario’s Mansion, Luigi’s Mansion. Something to keep in mind, I don't own a GameCube, nor I have bought Luigi's Mansion 3 yet. So the one I'm going with is Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon for the 3ds. Bad pun aside, Let's a go.

Plot

Professor E. Gadd has been researching ghosts in Evershade Valley, with some assistance from the ghost themselves. King Boo, who escaped his painting prison from Luigi’s Mansion 1, shatters the Dark Moon, a large crystal which has a pacifying effect on the ghosts that inhabit Evershade Valley, using the magic jewel embedded in his crown. This causes the ghosts to suddenly become hostile, forcing the Professor to take shelter in a bunker while dark, eerie fog covers the valley. The Professor immediately contacts Luigi and sends him to the bunker. He then tells Luigi to collect the five pieces of the Dark Moon, which have been scattered to different mansions. Luigi must explore the Gloomy Manor, the Haunted Towers, the Old Clockworks, the Secret Mine, and the Treacherous Mansion. To help Luigi, he provides him with several gadgets: a flashlight, the Poltergust 5000, an upgraded version of the Poltergust 3000, the Dual Scream, a DS used for communication purposes; and the Dark-Light Device, a special lens used for uncovering hidden objects. Luigi must strap on his big man-boy overalls to and capture and contain the ghosts before they leave the valley and wreak havoc on the rest of the world.

Good Boi

What’s there to say about Luigi when everyone pretty much knows him already. He's Mario's brother, he’s taller, ummmmmm. At the beginning of the game, Luigi is in the mansion that was remade for him based on the money you collected from the end of the first game, that was a fun little did you know. Luigi first appeared in Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch, where he loads cases of bottles in a bottling plant onto trucks with Mario. Luigi is placed on the left, while Mario is on the right. Luigi is the one who loads the truck, as well. Other than position, Luigi is identical to Mario in this game. But in terms of Luigi's mansion, I don't think I need to say more.

Good Man (Not Evil Man, Thanks Game Theory)

Professor Elvin Gadd, often shortened to Professor E. Gadd or simply E. Gadd is the scientist first appearing in Luigi's Mansion and founder of Gadd Science, Incorporated. He always makes ambiguous gibberish sounds when speaking and he frequently uses phrases such as "criminy", "hullabaloo", etc. His name comes from the archaic exclamation "egad," something that one says in surprise. In the game, E. Gadd takes up residence in Evershade Valley after learning that the ghosts there are friendly. Eager to examine ghosts without fear of being attacked by them, he sets up a laboratory in the Gloomy Manor and a Bunker close by the mansion. There, he begins researching the ghosts of the five mansions that populate the valley and sends his Toad assistants to the other four mansions in the valley to examine the ghosts there. At first, the resident ghosts welcome him and assist him in his lab, but when King Boo arrives and destroys the Dark Moon that hangs over Evershade Valley, the ghosts start running amok and destroy E. Gadd's equipment. He flees to his nearby Bunker and enlists the help of Luigi —to help rebuild the Dark Moon and calm the ghosts once more. E. Gadd was later revealed to have been unintentionally and indirectly responsible for King Boo's return, as he had sold his portrait in a garage sale, thus ensuring his escape. In this game, E. Gadd also made an upgrade of his Poltergust 3000 from the last game to the Poltergust 5000. This new Poltergust uses a Strobulb to stun ghost. Professor E. Gadd also introduces three new inventions: the Pixelator, a machine that turns Luigi into pixels and transports him to and from the different mansions, the Dual Scream, a Nintendo DS and is capable of communication, and the Dark-Light Device, which allows Luigi to see invisible objects. He doesn't leave the Bunker until the end of the game, directly after beating King Boo. He is best-o man in this game.

Bosses

Ah bosses, you either love them for how cool they are, or you hate them for how stupid they are, and this game is a bit of both to some people. Not me because I love them all, excluding the final boss because it’s King Boo and that shouldn’t be a spoiler because of course, he is.

ENEMY "SPOILERS" AHEAD

Grouchy Possessor

The Grouchy Possessor is the first Possessor boss Luigi faces in Dark Moon. He is fought in the Gloomy Manor's Cellar where he has taken over the body of a large spider. The Grouchy Possessor is the cause of the spider web infestation inside the mansion and he also has the second Dark Moon piece. The spider he possesses is large and purple. She has four green eyes, a red abdomen, and red and purple legs. Outside of the spider, the Grouchy Possessor looks like a white ghost with a large horn in the middle of his head. He has three layers of skin. The first one is white, which is seen when Luigi lures it out of the large spider for the first time. The second layer is yellow and the third is red. The Dark Moon piece can be seen inside of him. During the battle, the Grouchy Possessor may attack in several different ways. If Luigi approaches the large spider, it will attack Luigi with its front legs. While Luigi is pulling the webbing from the Possessor's web, it will summon red spiders to attack Luigi. The large spider will also spit out purple goop from its abdomen that travels in a straight line. If Luigi is hit while he is dragging the webbing, he will let go of it and the process needs to be repeated. Each phase change, the large spider will attempt to ram into Luigi. The Grouchy Possessor itself must be sucked up three times, one for each layer of skin - each time Luigi overpowers it, it will abandon its outer layer and retreat to its host to resume the battle. While outside of the spider, the Grouchy Possessor will attack by charging into Luigi. After this attack, the Grouchy Possessor will be temporarily stunned, opening itself for Luigi to stun the Possessor and capture it before it attempts to ram Luigi or return to the spider. After Luigi collects the Dark Moon piece and capturing the Possessor, the large spider shrinks down to normal size, free of her possession at last. She runs off with a horde of red spiders, freaking Luigi out momentarily before he can finally celebrate his victory.

Harsh Possessor

The Harsh Possessor is the second Possessor boss Luigi faces in the game. He is fought in the Tree House of the Haunted Towers, where he has taken possession of a staircase. Major Parascope activity was coming from the top of the Haunted Towers and E. Gadd sent Luigi to go investigate the scene. While possessing the staircase, the Harsh Possessor turns it into a giant mouth by turning the staircase inside-out. The wheels that allow the staircase to roll now forms a hinge that allows the mouth to open and shut. A blue flame burns on each of the steps of the staircase while a pair of lit torches form its eyebrows and eyes. Its tongue is a red cord and is only shown after attempting to crush Luigi. The Harsh Possessor's true form is that of a lean white ghost with two horns protruding from the front of its head. A fragment of the Dark Moon can be seen inside of it. The main attack of the Harsh Possessor while it's inside the staircase, is trying to lunge at Luigi. The Possessor will attempt to attack Luigi multiple times before flying into the air and trying to crush Luigi from above. After the Possessor has taken damage, it will start to throw two blue flames several times in a row. His lunge attack also gets progressively faster. While outside of the staircase, the Harsh Possessor can ram into Luigi twice in a row. After it finishes its second charge attack, it will be momentarily stunned and vulnerable to the Strobulb flash. ill say this much, it’s the least impressive boss out of the bunch.

Overset Possessor

The Overset Possessor is the third Possessor boss Luigi faces. He is fought on the Old Clockworks's Belfry where he has taken over the large Belfry Clock. Luigi sees the Overset Possessor when he first arrives at the Old Clockworks. Professor E. Gadd tells Luigi that major para scope readings are coming from the top of the factory and that he must go investigate the scene. The clock that the Overset Possessor takes control of is a large cuckoo clock. The stone clock face serves as the floor while the cuckoo chamber towers above. The clock hands can impede and hurt Luigi. Outside of the clock, the Overset Possessor looks like any other Possessor: thin, white, and has multi-layered skin. However, this Possessor has three horns, two ram-like horns in the back of his head and a curved one in the front. At the beginning of the battle, the clock's numbers will disappear and the clock hands will point at 12:00. Instead of fighting Luigi directly, the Overset Possessor will summon a group of ghosts every time the clock reaches an hour mark (1:00, 2:00, 3:00, etc.) If Luigi defeats the wave of ghosts, the number corresponding to the wave will reappear on the clock face and the battle will move to its next phase. After every four waves (4:00, 8:00, and 12:00), the Overset Possessor will pop out of the cuckoo chamber and attempt to ram into Luigi. After four rams, the Overset Possessor will be stunned, giving Luigi a chance to stun it with the Strobulb and suck it up with the Poltergust 5000's charged ability. As usual, this must be done three times to capture the ghost and secure the Dark Moon piece.

Shrewd Possessor

The Shrewd Possessor is the fourth Possessor boss Luigi faces once again. The Possessor's American name is a pun, as shrewd means piercingly cold. When possessing ice, the Possessor resembles a large, icy face with a big jaw and two gray eyes. When not being shielded by ice, the Shrewd Possessor is a thin, white, multilayered skin ghost. This Possessor has four horns: two horns that curve outward and a horn on each of those horns that protrude sideways. The Shrewd Possessor does not directly attack Luigi. Instead, it spirals down the Frozen Pit clockwise while shielding itself with ice sheets. If Luigi destroys the ice shield, it stops spinning and attempts to eat Luigi. While not possessing the ice, the Shrewd Possessor tries ramming his face into Luigi three times. Unlike the previous Possessors, this Possessor travels randomly through portals. After its third charge, it is stunned momentarily. It is possible for Luigi to stun it and start capturing it before it can attack. If Luigi takes too long destroying the ice sheets or keeps missing, the Possessor fully rebuilds the broken ice sheets. With each phase change, the machine Luigi uses goes back to normal and the Shrewd Possessor gets an extra sheet of ice protecting his face. Repeating this process three times earns Luigi a victory. My personal favorite when it comes to the design, but this fight was annoying.

Tough Possessor

The Tough Possessor is the fifth boss and final Possessor ghost Luigi faces before facing King Boo. He is fought in an unknown location inside the paranormal portal. The Tough Possessor has the final piece of the Dark Moon. The Tough Possessor possesses suits of armor seen within the room, notably those resembling the ones found in the Gloomy Manor's Guard Hall. When not possessing the armor, the Tough Possessor is a thin, white, multiskinned, ghost. This Possessor has two pairs of horns on the side of his head as well as a pointed horn protruding from the front of his head. Unlike the previous Possessors, the Tough Possessor is able to make clones of himself; up to four clones can be created at one time. While possessing the normal suits of armor, the Tough Possessor can attack Luigi with either an axe or a sword, depending on the weapon the suit of armor is carrying. If the Possessor misses the attack, the weapon will be stuck in the ground and render the Possessor immobile for some time. Outside of the suits of armor, the Possessor will try to ram into Luigi. When performing the charge, the Possessor can emit three trails behind him that damages Luigi. After one charge, however, he will be stunned for a moment, but he recovers quickly. In order to defeat the Possessor, Luigi must force it out of the suits of armor. During the first and second phases, Luigi must lure all the suits of armor that the Possessor is controlling onto the carpets and trip them all at the same time by vacuuming the carpets. After the third time, the Possessor will possess an enormous suit of armor.

When fighting the giant suit of armor, Luigi must lure both of the Possessor's feet onto the carpets. When Luigi pulls one of the carpets, the Possessor will be off-balance and Luigi will have to quickly swipe the carpet from under the other foot. This will cause the giant knight to fall out of the arena and break apart, revealing the Possessor, which Luigi must vacuum to obtain the final Dark Moon piece. If Luigi fails to do so the Tough Possessor will regain balance and the player will have to re-lure the foot that was off balance back onto the carpet. Hence the name tough because god this was tough.

Good Pupper

Polterpup , known as ??? (editor's note: Omg, a Polterpup is such a cute name~) in E. Gadd's Vault, is a specific Polterpup who appears throughout the game Unlike normal Polterpups, he has a red collar instead of blue. When Luigi briefly plays with him and, in the event Luigi loses all of his Heart Points, Polterpup will even lick him back to health as long as Luigi has a Gold Bone. Polterpup first appears in Gloomy Manor, where he is playing in the Mudroom Exterior and discovers an Amethyst after digging around the ground. While briefly playing with it, Polterpup winds up getting the Amethyst stuck in a tree, after which he leaves the Manor. King Boo's defeat and the restoration of the Dark Moon, Polterpup and his fellow ghosts are finally released from the Ghost Container. Upon being released, he unhappily approaches Luigi in acknowledgment of having caused his fair share of trouble during the absence of the Dark Moon. However, Luigi nevertheless cheers him up, much to Polterpup's delight. After Polterpup takes a celebratory photograph alongside Luigi, Mario, E. Gadd, the Toad Assistants and a few of his fellow ghosts, he is adopted by Luigi and accompanies him back to his home as his new pet. Yay happy ending.

Overall 8/10

This is an amazing game and a faithful to the original, even though there is some things I didn't like were one, the dumb mission objectives it takes you out of the game its just dumb! The multiple mansions could be fun the explore but there not all because of this. Two, E. Gadd calling every second something happens. This game is a childhood game so I have that to hold when I say this game is one of my favorites. I still had a fun time replaying this for another time.
